Estate Planners are often asked a question that has no definite answer: “How much does Estate Planning cost?” While this may seem like a simple enough question to ask, to answer isn’t as straightforward. The problem with answering stems from the underlying belief of the person asking the question that Estate Planning is a one-size-fits-all solution, because it most definitely is not. Even though we all need most of the same documents, what those documents say and do is inextricably intertwined with what you are trying to achieve with your planning. It's like asking a doctor for a diagnosis and treatment plan without her knowing anything about your medical history, what your symptoms are, how long you have had them. People don’t know what they don’t know. And, the truth is, Estate Planning is a complex process that requires you to answer many personal questions about your goals, dreams, fears, concerns, needs, and aspirations amongst other things. It's not a simple matter of filling out a form and calling it a day. A good estate planner will seek to understand your unique circumstances and craft a custom plan that meets your needs. The question is completely understandable, though. Often, it stems from wanting to know how much you need to budget for Estate Planning and making sure you're not being taken advantage of. But think of it this way: Estate Planning is as an investment for your peace of mind, your future, and your family's well-being.
